I believe use a vacuum tube mechanism. Which seems to mean that you can open them with a doctored tennis ball. Also via fark. Link opens video.

I have since read conflicting responses to the video. I do know that my vw had aftermarket vacuum locks but it was an 89...so that jibes with your knowledge...suspect indeed...I think this may be bunk...
